The Best Of Unheard Music

The Best Of Unheard Music

I was never a massive music fan and very rarely listened to music outside of my comfort zone purely out of fear of being beat up by the local children. Obviously this was obscene because how would they get inside my house when i'm listening to the music, it's not theoretically possible. Over the last couple of years i have slowly expanded my music collection and included some new artists that i hadn't heard about and would normally never have given a chance.

The problem is some of these artists are very good and not enough people know about them or the artists is too well known and considered to be popular music and you indie folk simply wont give them a chance, so hopefully this article will open your eyes a little and get you listening to some new music.

Carolina Liar - Coming To Terms (2008)

Carolina Liar - Coming To Terms - Cover

Carolina Liar are a small band based out of Los Angeles (USA) with music in the Rock genre. I discovered the band while i planning which bands would have the honour of seeing me at V Festival. I didn't actually go and see Carolina Liar because i hadn't listened to their album in full, it was only after V Festival that i got a liking for them and their brilliant song "Show Me What I'm Looking For".

After listening to "Show Me What I'm Looking For" over and over i decided to give the entire album a go and the album is equally as good, the majority of the songs on the album are strong and the range of tempo in the songs is great as it shows off what the band is capable of.

The album "Coming To Terms" consists of 12 tracks…

  1. I'm Not Over
  2. Coming To Terms
  3. Last Night
  4. Show Me What I'm Looking For
  5. Simple Life
  6. All That Shit Is Gone
  7. California Bound
  8. Done Stealin'
  9. Something To Die For
  10. Beautiful World
  11. Better Alone
  12. What You Are Near

I urge everyone to go and listen to Carolina Liar wherever they can and if you like the music please buy it, i don't like the thought of purchasing albums i will rarely listen too but i think if the songs were on CD the disc would no longer work.

Miike Snow - Miike Snow (2009)

Miike Snow - Miike Snow - Cover

Not be mistaken for one person but instead a group consisting of a singer songwriter and production team based out of Sweden. Again this is another band i discovered thanks to V Festival and luckily even discovered them before V Festival but due to me getting very drunk and going to see another band i never got the chance to see them.

I would say compare their sound to a mashup of Calvin Harris and, well any indie band in the world. The music has the electro noise as the backing with some very indie style locals over the top, but don't let it put you off because the noises are very nice noises, not like the ones those local bullies shout through my letter boxes every night.

I discovered the band after one of their songs, "A Horse Is Not A Home", was Single Of The Week on iTunes and i feel in love with their music, something that did annoy me was that the description of the song was "A mix of Calvin Harris style lyrics with a The Killers 'Human' style rhythm, something i couldn't disagree with anymore without loosing my temper and killing everything around me.

"A Horse Is Not A Home" is not my favourite song on the album but not my least favourite either, i guess the reason i'm not overly in love with the song is that it makes little sense, clearly a horse is not a home, why would you consider it a home?

My favourite song has to be 'Animal' on the album as it best represents the Calvin Harris style backing. The album consists of 11 tracks…

  1. Animal
  2. Burial
  3. Silvia
  4. Song For No one
  5. Black & Blue
  6. Sans Soleil
  7. A Horse Is Not A Home
  8. Cult Logic
  9. Plastic Jungle
  10. In Search Of
  11. Faker

Anyone who has a fancy for Calvin Harris' music should certainly get this album as it's certainly not an album that will grow old fast.

Red Light Company - Fine Fascination (2009)

Red Light Company - Fine Fascination - Cover

They are a indie rock band based in London (UK) with 5 band members, their music is compared to U2, Editors and Arcade Fire, personally i disagree with them sounding like U2 and simply cannot comment on Editors or Arcade Fire as i don't listen to them much either.

Personally if i had to choose which bands they sounded like i would go down the route of The Enemy and Friendly Fires because they have a very indie rock sound to their music which is obviously fitting as that is their genre they seem to stay within.

Like Miike Snow and Carolina Liar they only have one album, "Fine Fascination", which consist of 10 great songs all with the same vibe. Personally on my first listen i found it very hard to tell the songs apart because they all seem to follow a similar pattern, a pattern that works well.

My favourite songs on the album are "Worlds Of Spectacular" and "With Lights Out" i also really like the album cover because it has boobies on it. Not really sure what statement they were trying to make but it has boobies and i didn't even have to leave iTunes, normally you have to Google stuff like that.

  1. Worlds Of Spectacular
  2. Scheme Eugene
  3. Arts & Crafts
  4. First We Land
  5. With Lights Out
  6. New Jersey Television
  7. The Architect
  8. Meccano
  9. When Everyone Is Everybody Else
  10. The Alamo

Listen to the album on we7 first because i find that people see the album as a love it or hate it, so if you like the album please purchase it, if not then don't, simples.

Little Boots - Hands (2009)

Little Boots - Hands - Cover

Not really a very "unnoticed" artists because recently she has had a top 5 hit in the UK and is currently doing a small tour in the USA, however i thought i would mention her because i have a lot of respect for how this artists is embracing the internet and social media.

Little Boots (Victoria Christina Hesketh) is a UK musician born in Blackpool, Lancashire (woooooooooo LANCASHIRE!) and she creates Electropop music using keyboards, stylophone and piano, she also uses this really weird pattern dot thing which Wikipedia is tell me is called a "Tenori-on".

Her debut album called "Hands" which has a great selection of tracks all with that brilliant electropop feel to them and personally i love the album which apparently is quite odd because the majority of her fans seem to be of the other gender, you know the kind, the ones with boobies and that always smell and stuff, just makes me want to call them names and pull their hair.

  1. New In Town
  2. Earthquake
  3. Stuck On Repeat
  4. Click
  5. Remedy
  6. Meddle
  7. Ghost
  8. Mathematics
  9. Symmetry
  10. Tune Into My Heart
  11. Hearts Collide
  12. No Brakes
  13. Hands (hidden track)

On top of the album i have also got 4 additional tracks, 3 of which were given away through her website's newsletter.

  1. Little Boots Album Mix
  2. Remedy (Wideboys Stadium Remix)
  3. Remedy (Style of Eye Remix)
  4. Earthquake (Yes Giantess Remix)

The real reason i wanted to add Little Boots to my list is because she is brilliant at embracing the internet to sell her music, i'm signed up to the newsletter and often get e-mails about her songs and even links to download FREE remixes. I have seen her presence on MySpace, Twitter and Facebook and the thing i have the most respect for is that she does it herself.

The Last Bit

So these are some of my favourite albums/artists at the minute and i hope you will take some time to give them a go and hopefully you will buy their albums. Some other bands i didn't mention because they were more well known are below, you should give these a go if you haven't listened to them before.

  • Calvin Harris
  • La Roux (i hate her voice, but some of the mario music is good)
  • Friendly Fires
  • Phoenix
  • The Killers
