TunesPro 19cent Per Track

TunesPro 19cent Per Track

UPDATE: It has been brought to my addition that TunesPro is not legal. You buy from the website at your own risk, be warned.

As many of you may see i like to write about music on this website, without music the world would be pretty boring and i love to share my musical taste with random members of the public, kind of like how i stand on street corners shouting band names and songs at passing cars.

In this post i'm going to review a website which is quite new to me called TunesPro, it's like iTunes but much cheaper, in fact much much cheaper, like more than 50% cheaper than iTunes, it may as well be free it's just that cheap.

So TunesPro sell music through their website, the music you download is 100% DRM free which means you can put it on your iPod, Zune (Pfft) or other MP3 player and it will work a treat. The site has over 5.5 million tracks to download from all of your favourite artists from past and present.

Selection

Obviously selection is what makes or breaks music websites, if they don't have the music you want from the artists you want you are more than likely not to bother using the website. I decided to would go through my library of music and search for some obscure bands as well as some popular bands and see what results TunesPro gives me.

Alphabeat

I must admit i have quite the soft spot for really funky pop music and Alphabeat really satisfies my needs when it comes to that type of music. Well Alphabeat recently released a new single "The Spell" which is really funky and very 80's so i decided i would do a search and see just whether or not that song appear on TunesPro.

It didn't take much time to find the Alphabeat page with their Discovery of albums and songs. I did find The Spell almost straight away but discovered that The Spell was in fact an album from Alphabeat too, their new album, literally released yesterday (at the time of writing this) which i was unaware of, so obviously it was the perfect album to download and try out.

Alphabeat - The Spell Download

The most surprising thing you will have noticed is the price of the album, only $1.71 (around £1.05) which is extremely low for an album, in fact on iTunes you would be lucky to get 2 songs for close to that.

Alphabeat - The Spell in iTunes

So i was going to do a comparison of the price between iTunes and TunesPro but it turns out iTunes don't even have the album yet. A win for TunesPro i think.

Oasis

I chose Oasis because it is often hard to find Oasis albums online for purchase, i guess this is because they think they are bigger and better than they are and just don't away everyone to sell their music. A search for Oasis on TunesPro brought back their entire back catalogue and then some.

Oasis on TunesPro

Dig Out Your Soul is the latest/last album from Oasis so it served as the perfect album for comparison between TunesPro and iTunes. On TunesPro you can bag "Dig Out Your Soul" for a mere $1.88 (£1.13) which includes the bonus track, on iTunes you can pickup the album for $7.42 (£4.49) which is considerably more, almost 400% more than TunesPro.

Oasis on iTunes

The Killers

Did you really expect me to neglect The Killers from my review? As a massive fan of The Killers it is my duty to somehow add The Killers into every single one of my reviews.

The Killers on TunesPro

The Killers - Day & Age on TunesPro is only $1.88 (£1.13) and on iTunes a shocking $13.21 (£7.99) which is a huge jump.

The Killers on iTunes

Another find, a double-whammy if you will, is the Limited Edition 7-inch Box Set of B-Sides on TunesPro for $1.88 (£1.13) which iTunes does not have.

The Killers Exclusive Limited Edition 7 Inch Album

Flight Of The Conchords

I decided to throw a curve ball at TunesPro to see how it stacked up with obscure albums and thought a comedy album from the classic TV show "Flight Of The Conchords" would be the best way to test TunesPro against iTunes.

Flight of the Conchords on TunesPro

The latest album by Flight Of The Conchords is available through TunesPro again for a very low price of only $2.22 (£1.34) as apposed to the $13.21 (£7.99) that iTunes is charging.

Flight Of The Conchords on iTunes

I was then shocked when i look through TunesPro and found 4 Flight Of The Conchords albums when iTunes only has 2. So clearly TunesPro has a better selection when it comes to comedy.

Cost

So the biggest positive with TunesPro is the price of the music they offer, albums seem to be literally a fraction of the iTunes price which is a huge positive for anyone looking to buy quantities of music online.

Legality

My first thought when visiting the website was how could the prices possibly be legal, TunesPro looked to be giving away the music on the website with their really low prices so i couldn't see how this was legal.

After e-mailing them i found out that the prices are promotional, currently the service is making a loss on all music they sell through the website which is unsurprising when the tracks are only $0.29 each, when the promotional period ends TunesPro will start to charge $0.79 per track which is still considerably less than iTunes.

Simplicity

As a designer a website needs to look good in order to keep me and TunesPro certainly steps up to the game with their simple well designed website which is extremely easy to navigate and find the music you want.

Conclusion

Obviously if you spend lots of money on iTunes then you would love to save some money on music, TunesPro certainly is the best option with tracks being so low in price which means you could pay around a third of what you would on iTunes and get the same amount of music.

Tunespro is not legal. They have the Beatles Catalog on their site. hypepot has already retracted their statement that it is a legal site. They are not compensating artists or paying royalites

Well if there is proof that it is an illegal service i will happily edit the post and make people aware. I\'m only going off what i was told.

this site is not legal. I have friends that distribute their albums for free on their website under a creative commons licence, and tunespro sells these albums without paying the artists. They denied a request to remove these albums.

That is thieft, and violating the CC license of these albums.

Correct, hence my retraction post and update. TunesPro ARE illegal.

You know what I hate is that I have purchased album 1 or 2 or 3 tmes already through various medias (LP, cassete, and yes, even 8 track) so when I see something like this, I am really tempted to take them up on it as I have already paid for the album multiple times.
