Will Ferrell - Top 8

Will Ferrell - Top 8

Over the last few months i've been in the Will Ferrell kind of mood and been watching a lot of his awesome films. So i decided to would post about my favourite Will Ferrell films and why because, lets face it, he is a very funny man.

His career seemed to start out as quite a quiet one but since Anchorman he has blown up and at one stage he went through a stage of releasing several films a year, most of which went unnoticed until their DVD release. So without standing on roof tops crying out a long list of his releases and forcing people to go and watch them i decided i would blog about it.

You might be thinking that it's not the best way and that screaming at people and forcing them IS the best way to make them see the films, if you do i don't blame you but i'm not making that mistake again, standing on a roof is extremely dangerous and it makes it even more hazardous when people are throwing things at you saying "Will you shut up, this is my grandfathers funeral and you're just making everyone upset" - in my defence, i wasn't the only inconsiderate bastard making everyone upset, the guy in the coffin was the main reason, just putting it out there.

#1 Anchorman: The Legend Of Ron Burgundy - 2004

“It's the 1970's as San Diego anchorman Ron Burgundy is the top dog in network TV, which gives way to his freewheeling sexism with his fraternal-like crew. But all that's about to change (or be jeopardized) when ambitious reporter Veronica Corningstone has just arrived as a new employee at his TV station” - imdb.com

The film is very funny and certainly one of the modern comedy classics which has some of the most quoted one-liners i've ever seen.

One of my favourite scenes in the entire move is the news team fight scene where all the local news teams meet down an alley and begin to fight it out, so obviously i couldn't explain something as amazingly funny as a video, but it turns out YouTube is really shit and full of remixes and parodies…. so below is the best one i could find.

#2 Talladega Nights: The Ballad Of Ricky Bobby - 2006

“NASCAR stock car racing sensation Ricky Bobby is a national hero because of his "win at all costs" approach. He and his loyal racing partner, childhood friend Cal Naughton Jr., are a fearless duo -- "Shake" and "Bake" by their fans for their ability to finish so many races in the #1 and #2 positions, with Cal always in second place. When flamboyant French Formula One driver Jean Girard challenges "Shake" and "Bake" for the supremacy of NASCAR, Ricky Bobby must face his own demons and fight Girard for the right to be known as racing's top driver.” - imdb.com

This placing was very close to Semi-Pro but when i tried to remember some of my favourite scenes from Semi-Pro they were nowhere near as funny as the ones i found for Talladega Nights.

This is another film where Will Ferrell's character gets too big for his boots and speeds to the bottom fast this time with his co-star being none-other than Borat (Sacha Baron Cohen) who plays a rival NASCAR driver from France.

In true Ferrell style the film has some very memorable scenes that really play little part in the story but simply add to the comedy, which i believe is how all comedies work. Well all good comedies anyway.

#3 Semi-Pro - 2008

“Three men, three dreams. It's 1976 in Flint, Michigan. Jackie Moon's American Basketball Association team languishes in last place, with few fans in the seats. Jackie dreams of a merger with the NBA. A tough-minded point guard named Monix is at the end of his career; he's played on the champion Celtics but accepts a trade to Flint to be close to Lynn, the love of his life. Clarence "Coffee" Brown dreams of stardom: he's the Tropics' best player, but he's a hotdog who doesn't value teamwork. When the trio learns that a merger is in the works that won't include the Tropics, they pull the team together to try to achieve the impossible.” - imdb.com

Semi-Pro is different from many of Will Ferrell's films because it has very few memorable scenes in it, with that said it is a very funny film and i would highly recommend it to any Ferrell fan.

One of my favourite scenes in the film has to be the Jive Turkey scene (below)

#4 Step-Brothers - 2008

“Brennan Huff and Dale Doback are both about 40 when Brennan's mom and Dale's dad marry. The sons still live with the parents so they must now share a room. Initial antipathy threatens the household's peace and the parents' relationship. Dad lays down the law: both slackers have a week to find a job. Out of the job search and their love of music comes a pact that leads to friendship but more domestic disarray compounded by the boys' sleepwalking. Hovering nearby are Brennan's successful brother and his lonely wife: the brother wants to help sell his step-father's house, the wife wants Dale's attention, and the newlyweds want to retire and sail the seven seas.” - imdb.com

Released around the same time as Semi-Pro, Step Brothers has to be one of Will Ferrell's most mainstream films in the cinema and all with good reason, a film featuring two very funny men (Ferrell & O'Reilly) was bound to do well and although it lacked the "randomness" of other Ferrell film it was still very funny.

The reason it falls so low on my chart is simply because i enjoy the classic Ferrell films, the films i saw before everyone else decided to jump on the bandwagon.

The Rest

I'm a pretty lazy person which is why writing about only 4 of the top 8 is something i feel is acceptable, so your most likely thinking by now "Where the hell is the close button" and all for good reason because sometimes i even get bored writing the blog posts so god can only know how you feel about reading them.

  • #5 Elf (2003)
  • #6 Blades Of Glory (2007)
  • #7 Land Of The Lost (2009)
  • #8 Old School (2003)

Anchorman 2

I'm not really sure how well supported this is or whether it is just a rumour because IMDB have turned into some commercial money-grabbing cock-suckers and don't give you information on the films that are expected in the near future.

However if this is true i'm very excited about Anchorman 2, the first Anchorman as you have been is Number 1 on my chart and i think if they write the sequel well and make it even funnier or just as funny as the first one they will pull in the big bucks. I know a lot of people have heard of "Wake Up, Ron Burgundy: The Lost Movie" but this was simply made up of all the unfunny off-cuts from the original Anchorman which is most likely why very few people have seen it, because it's tosh.

I guess we can only sit back and wait to see whether or not Anchorman 2 comes out, even if it doesn't i'm sure Will Ferrell has a few good movies up his sleeve, films we can only wait for.

Eastbound & Down

I understand WIll Ferrell is an executive producer on some episodes of Eastbound & Down and he also plays the part of Ashley Schaeffer of Schaeffer BMW on the show, another one of his funny characters. Luckily Eastbound & Down is starting to air soon in the UK so i urge everyone who hasn't already seen the show to get their Sky+ in order and record it. Series Link FTW.

Funny or Die

Will Ferrell is also one of the brains behind the website Funny or Die which is a YouTube-like website for comedy videos and Will Ferrell has also taken the time to upload some of his own creations, creations that made the website big.
